This week Natalie shares about a profile on social media that recently shared their frustration about veganism while getting ready for their day. Senator Cory Booker Wants to Reshape the Farm Bill
This week Natalie and Tara are chatting about the latest news from Senator Cory Booker. If you’re at all familiar with the show, then you know how much Natalie and Tara “love” Cory Booker. In case you’re new to the conversation, Cory Booker has a history of getting his fingers involved with making decisions in ag even though he has no connection or ties to agriculture. His biggest schtick is fixing the “broken American food system”. Natalie wraps up this industry news that unless you work in ag, then you shouldn’t be making decisions about ag. This is a shoutout for Cory Booker, the ladies would like to officially invite you on the show! You read the full article on Cory Booker and the Farm Bill here!
Rachael Ray Creating Plant-Based Recipes for NYC Schools
The second industry news piece that Natalie and Tara are covering is a little older but extremely important. In late September, Rachael Ray was appointed to lead an initiative in developing plant-based lunch recipes for public schools in NYC. According to the article, there is a new Chefs Council that is made up of highly accredited chefs to roll out this program. While having the council made up of chefs is great, but the biggest question here is, why aren’t there any dieticians on the council? Natalie and Tara go back and forth discussing the multitude of problems this could potentially lead to even beyond the obvious nutrient deficiency concerns. Make sure to tune in to catch the full conversation!
The Great Debate of Raw Milk
Welcome to the pinnacle of today’s Discover Ag episode, Tara is giving us all of the facts about raw milk and what you need to know about it to make an informed opinion of your own. Having grown up on a dairy, Tara was raised drinking raw milk until she was 25 and moved off the farm. Did you know that the sale of raw milk is illegal in some states? It’s true and that is mostly due to the risk factor of people getting sick from it. Something to note is Tara stresses it isn’t the milk itself that can get you sick but mostly the process of keeping the milk free of bacteria. This is one of those stories that you’re going to have to tune in to listen to!
To wrap up the conversation about raw milk, Tara brings about a study that she’s been following about the immune development between the Amish and Hutterite Children. While there are a lot of similarities in lifestyle, the major difference is that Amish tend to live on their farms, close to their animals while the Hutterite children live in more community-style housing. The study states that the Hutterite children overall have a lower immune system compared to the Amish kids because of their lack of proximity to the land. You can read the full study here.
To wrap up today’s episode, Nat and Tara cover their last segment, which is “Last Three Tabs” where they both cover the last three tabs they had open on their computer. If you haven’t caught this segment then make sure to tune in!
