In the Moment at the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef
What makes this conference so special is that not only do you have beef producers from the US, but you also have producers from over 24 other countries to discuss the larger conversation around sustainable beef. Natalie and Tara were both featured on some panels during the conference. One of Natalie’s key takeaways from the conference was regarding a study done on why people choose the meat they do in stores. She was interested to learn that 86% of consumers look for “better” meat when deciding at the grocery store what to buy. Further breaking down that percentage, 35% of those people care about the meat being better for the farmer, 64% picked it if it was better for them, 35% picked based on it being better for the planet, and 31% picked based on animal welfare. We would love to hear your thoughts on these statistics, head over to our Instagram to drop your thoughts! For this conversation and more, make sure to tune into today’s episode.
Industry News
Beef has Beef with Google
Our first featured story for this week’s Industry News is the trending story about Beef vs Google. In case you missed it, Google is set to implement a new feature in its search that will tell the user how climate-friendly their recipe choices are when searching for recipes on the search engine. There are quite a few articles that have been released on this topic, but at the end of the day, there is a lot that goes into the ingredients for a recipe and the concern is, how skewed is the data and whether is it really telling the full story. While there has been a lot of back and forth on the topic, it’s important to take away from this conversation that greenhouse gas outputs cannot solely be put on any one industry and that it will take the effort of everyone to scale back our footprint. If you’re interested in reading the full article, you can do so here.
Plans for the Colorado River
It’s no surprise that water scarcity has been a problem in the southwest for many years, but it may finally be coming to a head and forcing states to take other measures to find water. In this story, Nat and Tara are discussing the topic of how the federal government is threatening to unilaterally cut water deliveries from Lake Powell and Lake mead. Both of those lakes release more than 2 trillion gallons of water each year to cities and farms throughout the southwest. In the past, the government and states that use the river have been able to negotiate but that might be changing in the near future. You can find all the details of this story here.
Bottle Water vs Soda
With water scarcity on the brain, Tara shared a fun fact that Americans are now drinking more bottled water than soda. With the updates on the water situation, we aren’t sure if it’s a good thing or not but way to go America for trying to be healthier!
To wrap up today’s episode, Nat and Tara cover their last segment, which is “Last Three Tabs” where they both cover the last three tabs they had open on their computer. If you haven’t caught this segment then make sure to tune in!
