Joe Burrow, Blake Griffin, Around 20 More Athletes Buy Iowa Farm for Roughly $5M | Read the Story Here
This week’s industry news series starts with a feature on a trending story about how Blake Griffin, Joe Burrow along with other NFL athletes are investing in American farmland. This story in particular discusses a deal where they bought a 104 acre farm in Iowa for 5 million dollars. This story is hot because people are saying there is no way that 5 million was paid for just the 104 acres, it’s looking like the farm was part of a package deal that was bought along with other farms with different uses. Both Natalie and Tara feel that with the high start-up costs for farms and ranches, this might actually be a move in the direction and give farmers an opportunity to get started in agriculture with investors footing the bill. They are excited to keep tabs on this story and if you have something to add, make sure to head over to the Discover Ag Instagram to join the conversation.
California’s Statewide Ban on Animal fur Products Officially Takes Effect | Read the Story Here
Moving right along to the next news story, in this case, it’s actually a press release from the Humane Society of the United States. This press release came out right before the new year stating that California will ban the sale and distribution of fur within state borders. Interestingly enough, California is the number one purchaser of fur in the United States, so while the press release states that California supports this bill, the statistics say otherwise. You’ll have to tune in to the full episode to catch Nat and Tara’s differing opinions on the fur market.
Red Meat is not a Health Risk. New Study Slams Years of Shoddy Research | Read the Story Here
This is our kind of news story. We are giving major snaps to Big Think on publishing this study stating that years of “shoddy” research have overstated the risk (or lack thereof) of consuming red meat. Nat and Tara are here for all of the facts and one of their favorite quotes from the study is,
“They [scientists at the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME)] only found weak evidence that unprocessed red meat consumption is linked to colorectal cancer, breast cancer, type 2 diabetes, and ischemic heart disease, and no link at all between eating red meat and stroke.”
