What The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is all About

This month's book is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, written by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This riveting historical fiction novel revolves around the aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon, Evelyn Hugo, as she is finally ready to tell the truth about her both, glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself.

The Beginning

Kylie kicks off today's episode by giving our audience a brief timeline of the book for those of you who haven't read or finished it yet, What really intrigued Kylie about choosing this book was the title, almost strictly because she can't imagine going through more than one husband, let alone seven. Another important aspect of this book is when it takes place. The story of Evelyn Hugo is being recaptured through journalist Monique as she recounts her life in Hollywood in the 50s and 60s, a time when generally a woman comes second to her husband.

Digging In

Diving deeper into the conversation, Natalie asks Kylie her general feelings about Evelyn's character and how she chose to navigate her life. Kylie, in turn, responds with while she respects Evelyn for her grit and determination to get to where she wants to be, she doesn’t necessarily align with how she got there. Natalie shares the same sentiment, with the caveat that it’s important to remember the time when this story took place, and how it’s also hard to say what she would have done in Evelyn’s shoes if it had been her. Tara jumps into the conversation offering a different perspective, mentioning that it wasn’t just Evelyn using people to get to where she wanted to go, her husbands along with the way also knew what they were doing as well, so it wasn’t just Evelyn to blame.

Another interesting perspective that Kylie has about this book is that it gives us a little insight into what celebrities’ lives look like on the other side and the pressure of having an image to uphold and the story they have to constantly be telling themselves and the public. There are several points in the story that reflect this perspective, even when it comes to the end and finding out the real tie that Monique, the journalist has to Evelyn.

Make sure to catch the full episode for all the details and thoughts the ladies had about the book for this month. There are lots of great nuggets in this episode that you won’t want to miss, including the wrap-up of the conversation when Natalie asks Kylie which celebrity she would want to interview at the end of their life. Tune in to find out which celebrity each gal would interview if they had the chance.
